Saturday August 17th Rashad Cunningham, licensed to carry a handgun, was shot and killed by a Gary Police Officer, while sitting in the passenger seat with his handgun on his lap outside of his home. All that is known at this time 4 days later, is that officers were responding to a shots fired call in the area. Witnesses say officers rolled up demanded ID while approaching the vehicle, seen the handgun yelled gun and opened fire. To my knowledge this is all the available information at the time of this post. It appears Rashad is licensed, has no criminal history, and was not participating in illegal activity, according to witnesses. Nothing has been reported from GPD or the city of Gary, except to tell the public there is no body camera footage or dashcam footage.

If this is in fact how it all went down, I say we hold a really in Gary.

I would like to say there is no way it happened like that. But the Glenn Rightsell case says it is possible.

You've done a good job of reporting exactly what the family and their attorney say.

First the guy who got killed by ISP on the side of the road, now Gary police, when is the state going to get with it and mandate cameras for all agencies?

There's just no information to work with. It's incredible how the way every single police use of force before the 1990s was investigated and judged has now become unthinkable.

Cameras are needed in this day and age. It would make supporting a justified shooting easier.

That seems to be the outcome the majority of the time. Reasonable people can be walked through a video and gain an understanding of why a shooting happened. If a use of force was not justified, the evidence will show that just the same.

It's an old rule of conspiracy theories: When the government leaves gaps in the narrative, people invent stuff to fill them.

By what authority could the State force departments to fund this equipment? Are you saying, "There needs to be a law?" If the State mandates it, are they paying for it?

Since some department like the state police are not doing it on there own. A law seems necessary. The lawsuits and settlements prevented should cover the cost. When the shooting is justified and on video no need to settle.

Rumors do thrive in an information vacuum.
