    Pike student arrested?

PIKE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CHARGED AFTER GUN FOUND IN CAR
INDIANAPOLIS — A Pike High School student was taken into custody and charged on Tuesday, after school police found a gun in their car, said the district.

Police found the gun in the locked car while investigating suspected marijuana use. The car was on school property.

The district says that the gun was legally owned by a student and that they had a valid license to carry.

It’s the second gun school police have found in less than a month. On Feb. 5, school police found a gun in a backpack while investigating suspected vape use.

Full statement from the Pike Township schools:

“The Pike Police Department discovered a gun in a locked vehicle on the Pike High School campus while conducting a search related to suspected marijuana use. Although the gun was legally owned by the student with a valid license to carry, the person was charged and taken into custody.”

Does anyone have more information on this story?

So they can enter a locked vehicle on just suspicion. Seems like a serious bit of to me.

Over on FB, Guy R. Commented that students (and those expelled within the last 24 months) are exempted from the guns-at-school-while-locked-in-your-car exemption. I think that goes for searches too. But I’ll defer to the real lawyers on that one.

I don't know the law as well as I wish I did, but it is my understanding from the school safety specialist trainings that I have been to is that yes, schools are allowed to search lockers, backpacks, vehicles, etc. based on suspicion.

Pretty sure it's been that way for a long time. You consent to searches when you agree to the rules required to get a parking pass and use the school lot. It certainly was that way when I was in high school.

Well I am old. School lot was 1st come 1st park. Late comers had to park on the street or in the surrounding area and walk a bit. Lot was full every day. No passes.
But those were times that no drugs/guns or other dumb **** showed up in school for the most part. Seems the world is slipping towards THE BRINK.
