    Lengths

    Here's the basics:

I have an old rifle I wish to modify for a project. I want to take the buttstock off.

With the buttstock off and the non welded flash hider still on, the overall length would be just a hair over 26"

I may wish to cut the barrel down or at least take the flash hider off which would put me under 26". Since this would not be capable of being shouldered, would this be legal, and would it classify this as a pistol?

Are there any hidden gotchas I need to be aware of? I intend to fully comply with the law, but I am not exactly sure where this lies within the law.

As it started out with a shoulder stock, it is still a rifle in the eyes of the law.

As stated above, it started life a rifle, so as far as the atf is concerned it will always be a rifle having to comply with rifle laws

Thanks folks. It shall stay greater than 26" OAL and I will build on a pistol frame like a TC for my shorter project (Mark III).
