My two youngest daughters are 11 and 13. Both are expressing interest in learning survival skills so figured I would teach them how to build a shelter. We used sticks, twine and a tarp. Things I always have with me anytime I set out for a hunt or hike in the woods.

It's bigger than what I would build in an emergency situation. But for learning purposes I think its just right. We were going to finish it off with two more tarps on both sides but mother nature wasn't playing nice today. Overall we had fun and I think its something they will always remember.

It was a great day. There interest in the outdoors has taken on a whole new life form since they have read Hunger Games and How to survive a zombie attack.

For size reference we used an 8x10 tarp.

Good for you Dad. It is great to see parents teaching such things to their kids and to have the kids actually have an interest in learning outdoor skills and gaining an interest in doing such things instead of becoming couch potatoes and playing video games. I really wish that many more families would participate in such activities.
