My girlfriend and I plan to buy her dad a new knife for Father's Day,

he currently had the gerber swagger or mini swagger cant remember, it doesn't hold an edge for more than a few days. I sharpen it and try to maintain it but he uses it everyday and he works in a machine shop. I think the blade is coming in contact with metal surfaces alot but I can't say for sure. Either way it's a 20 dollar knife with cheap steel.

looking for remondations on blades of similar size to the Gerber Swagger that had a better steel for hard use in the 40-60 dollar range.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Anything Buck, even their low-end folders are better than Gerber. Check out Buck Knives, look at Amazon for them. Not sure what a 110 hunter goes for anymore, but that knife is wonderful.

If it comes into metal contact, why not a utility knife? And maybe a fat pack of higher end blades?

Yup. If he doesn't use his knife in the right manner, there's no sense in getting him a good knife. If it's going to be used to cut on metal and beaten up all the time, a utility blade where you just swap the blade would be the best option.

If he's going to use it in a machine shop, find something with D2 tool steel. You can get the Ontario RAT with D2 now and it's in the price range.
