In order to meet the absolute bare necessities, a list should include a center-fire bolt action rifle. :)

Sort of how I look at it, too. The OP describes a very basic "golf bag" that is missing a driver.

(Side note: I use the "golf club" analogy to explain to my wife why I need so many guns. "Just like you use different clubs for different shots..." Even though she doesn't golf, it's a really easy concept to grasp, and it's even gotten to where she has once asked "Do we have a gun that would be good for _______?" Awesome.)

Id say the list would be:
    1: .22LR rifle
    2: 12ga shotgun
    3: Mosin Nagant
    4: .357 wheelgun
    5: .45 1911

but of course youll also need a .22 wheelgun and automatic both, a fancy AR to fit in with the cool kids, a sxs to clean out on the porch, a derringer, a couple more mosins, and a few choices of 9mm and 380 for cc

    only 5?

If it had to be only 5, it would have to be broken down by category/purpose. YMMV

    1) Scoped bolt-action rifle for longer range precision (preferably .308 for commonality of caliber. Suppressed optional/preferred)

    2) Battle rifle, magazine-fed in .30 cal (ex. FAL, G3/91, AR10, M1A, etc.)

    3) Standard military rifle/carbine (select-fire, or semi version if you can't swing it) M16/M4, AR15, AK47/74, H&K 33/93, FNC or SCAR, etc.
AR/AK platform preferred and recommended. Pick one and standardize.

    4) Shotgun (pump or semi in 12 Gauge) ex. Benelli, Remington, Mossberg

    5) Sidearm (.45 or 9mm)

Training in how to use them.

    Mine - Ruger SR9c

    3) Revolver, at least .38

    My choice for main (5)
    1) main battle rifle--AR-15 M-4 variant in .223 with dual 30 round mags, tactical light/laser combo and Aimpoint optic.

    2) Side arm-Para Ordinance P-14 in .45 ACP with multiple mags. No offence to those who like them but a 9 mm is not an option

    3) Remington 700 in 30-06 (.308 is OK) with a decent glass for reaching out to touch something.

    4) 12 gauge shotty. Either a pump or auto loader. Hard to choose a favorite brand but at least a Mossy. Prefer a Siaga.

    5) Back up hand gun. I prefer a wheel gun for back up in 5 shot for easy conceal and carry. The .44 special Charter arms bull dog is a good choice here. Some will prefer a smith or colt. Many other brands available but this is a concealed back up.

I have them all covered except for the evil black taccticool AR, AK or SKS.

    1. S&W 22A-1 and Ruger 10/22
    2. Oldie but goodie, Westernfield 12 gauge (Mossberg made it for Wards bcd in the day)
    3. Taurus 24/7 Pro (9mm)
    4. Taurus 709 Slim (9mm)
    5. I will use my Marlin 1894c 38/.357 for that until I figure out why I need to spend another $1,000 on one that I will use so seldom when I already have the others.
