I purchased a adjustable rear sight for my S&W 645. I took a wood dowel an hammered what I thought was very hard on the existing rear sight. It bid not budge. This is a great gun abd I do not want to damage it. Wanting the adj. sight because all I can do is target shoot. Any help will be appreciated.

The only example I have witnessed is an old gunsmith using a brass bar about 4 inches long which doesn't mar steel, but transfers energy more efficiently than wood.

Which direction did you hammer it?

With the muzzle away they go in from right to left, so out would be opposite that.

A decent bench block, and sturdy bench, helps to transfer more exactly what you're putting into the system.
