Had a chance to reconnect with an LT from my USMC days last night. He lives in Taiwan. When we got to talking about guns, he mentioned the fact that possession of even a bullet, let alone a gun, will land you in prison for life. He went on to say..."So nobody on the island has guns...well except for the criminal element."

    Imagine that?!

Even the threat of a life sentence fails to dissuade the criminal element from doing what they're going to do with a firearm.

I am worried that at some point will get that way here. The public seems to turn on gun activists when the media portrays us as evil and guns evil.

That's because they keep seeing racist nut jobs like Bundy. If you ignore the issue with the cattle and just focus on the person, is he really who you want portraying "gun owners" in the U.S.? Gun activists can't seem to focus on the gun issue. It seems like they have to keep throwing tinfoil rants into the mix.

So they have the guns and an added motivation to leave no witnesses. Perfect.

Taiwan sounds exactly like the Obama/Reid 'vision' for the U.S.

Re: Bundy - LOTS of people are 'poor' emissaries for the pro-2A movement. While I disagree with Bundy's racial commentary, he's certainly no worse of a 'pro-gun' spokesman than some we have right here in Indiana, who are just as vocal. There's plenty of :tinfoil: out there who, unfortunately, also benefit from 2A.

    Nature of the beast.

Do you believe that even racist, net jobs deserve to be defended against an overbearing government? Or is there a purity test that one has to pass before you'll defend him?

Has it occurred to you that the government first goes after racist nut jobs in the belief that no one will stand up to defend them? And that your turn in the barrel will eventually come because no one is left to defend you?

Of course they deserve to be defended, but that wasn't my point.

This..so much of this. That's exactly when Sarah Palin started sounding like a lunatic at the NRA Stand and Fight Rally...when she got off the topic of guns.

That wasn't his point. Bundy is (among many others) not going to get the gun-owner-of-the-year award. He is not the best person to represent us.

Of course he deserves to be defended. Every legal gun owner deserves to be defended, but not all of them should be the new face of the second amendment. Sadly, only the "interesting" gun owners get the spotlight. This is how it works because the media owns said spotlight.

He should never have been talking to the media. The media does far more damage to innocent people than the government could ever hope.

We don't always get to pick and choose who we are allied with... or who the media wants to make the "face" of anything. Yes, he would be better for gun owners if he was a grandmother with kittens crawling all over her, but he ain't... and we cannot throw him overboard because he is a jerk. Although, the TV station did selectively edit the tape to make him sound much worse than what he actually said. Much like they did with Zimmerman.

I have actually spoken to some people from Taiwan about guns. The situation there is kind of surprising because they're not what we'd think of as a "gun-fearing culture," though there are no civilian guns over there. All able-bodied men have to serve in the military. So all adult males and some women have at least some firearm experience. They don't easily fall into the anti or pro camp, and their opinions about guns tend not to line up with liberal or conservative positions here. Guns don't stand for freedom like they do for many people here, nor do they stand for Big Bad Black Things that will go off by themselves and eat your children. For example, when the terrible massacre happened at Sandy Creek, a Taiwanese friend basically thought of it as a case of insufficient monitoring -- obviously the mom needed a better safe, and to prevent such future shootings of kids by kids, gun owners need to demonstrate to the authorities they store their firearms safely. She didn't think twice about "assault weapons" or gun ownership -- why not own some good firepower if you're going to own guns at all? (She probably shot some M16s in the army.) On the other hand, she also didn't think twice about gun registration. I don't know how typical she is, but compared to many people here, they have a very different relationship with the government there. After all, they have a single-payer medical insurance system, and their healthcare is quite good.
