Guys I need to say hello to all of you. I just registered on the forum.

My name is Don and I live in Michigan very close to I-69 and the state line.

I have been following this forum for a very long time. I have a question for all.

I never have been spammed with what I would call porno emails until shortly after I followed the link posted on the INGO forum to the Springfield Armory drawings a few weeks ago. Registering each day for these drawings is the only thing that I have done to alter my daily internet routine for a very long time. My question is, has anyone else on the INGO forum had this problem?

Once again, hello to all, and thanks to all for the really great info that I have gained from reading the INGO forum.

    Don

Hmmm... I participated in that contest, but I opted out of future contacts. Haven't had a single e-mail from Springfield or anyone else and I used a custom e-mail so that I would know.

Thanks for the welcome. I don't think my spam is a result of visiting the INGO forum. I only noticed it after registering for the Springfield drawings.

I dont think its from Springfield. My mail provider allows me to setup aliases for disposable email addresses, etc. I created a special one for the Springfield drawings and have seen absolutely NOTHING except their stuff in my inbox. (each alias' messages land in their own folder)

Dudley at NAGR on the other hand... He sells his list. At least to political groups. I started getting stuff from a Rand Paul PAC on the alias I setup specifically for NAGR. And it took forever to get off his (NAGR) list as well.

I'm sort of a puter dummy and just trying to figure out if the spam is coming from something I did out of the ordinary.

By the way, I really like what I have saw on this forum over the years that I have been following. Looks like a great group of people.

Its OK, what you theorized is not far fetched.

I have had the same experience with the Springfield Armory drawing, not a hint of spam. Do you take precautions against tracking when surfing, efudd? Once spammers become aware of a new valid email address they sell it to others of their ilk and you get hit pretty hard. Worst I ever had was I had ordered a fairly rare book used from HPB(half price books) marketplace and the sweller was obviously stalling on sending the item. I think they didn't necessarily stock what they sold and went in search of it once a sale was made, but as I mentioned I ordered a fairly rare tome. I finally complained to HPB Marketplace and they gave my email to the purveyor so we could try to work out a satisfactory settlement. That particular alias was bombarded. Had to close it down. The spam this sort of event triggers will run the entire gamut and have nothing to do with anything you've ever clicked on

    Wow

My spam filter is set at a point that I thought was tight. All the crap stuff has been going to a separate folder. My spam folder has been getting hit 10+ times a day.

Just have been trying to figure it out, lol

Oh well, guns and shooting is more fun to talk about.

OK if i stick around for a while?

Hi and welcome. I have signed up for those drawings several times and have not noticed an increase in spam email. I wonder if it makes a difference if you use a public network or a private one? Can such information be more readily harvested from, say, restaurant wifi? I'm not sure... just speculating. I know I never do any banking or anything tied to my credit card on a public network.

You are right to be careful about public networks, but collecting e-mails for spamming is unlikely to be one of the problems you encounter there. You need to be far more concerned about having your communications spied on on public networks.

The bulk of spamming comes from selling/buying e-mail lists, hacked databases containing e-mails, and users voluntarily entering their e-mails at sketchy web sites.

I've never entered the Springfield contests and I don't get a terrible amount of spam. Some of the spam I get is interesting though. Apparently some of them think I'm black, and Jewish (I'm neither). :):

    Hi guys and gals

Thanks for all of the WELCOMES to the forum.

I do not use WIFY of any sort at home or in a public place. That was a very good thought though. I'm connected to the net with a fiber optic cable from my local Board of Public Utilities only. I do not click on links in emails or any sort of that stuff. Some how over the last few weeks or month, I must have screwed up. I'm just trying to figure out my mistake.

Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

So, my next post will about the more fun things in life, like SHOOTING and loving it since I was 4 years old and my Gramps let me pull the trigger on his bolt .22 for the first time.

Efudd, I've been getting a ton, accidentally opened a couple when they hit my inbox while I was checking it, and they are for different stuff, but the format of all of them are the same. I'm not sure if this is why it's getting past the filters or if it's cause I'm using a crappy free email? Regardless, I wouldn't worry to much about it, usually you can tell it's junk even before opening it.
Btw, I'm going to be gone for awhile, apparently I hit it big in the European lottery:rockwoot:
