I want to buy a 1911 build kit. The kit comes with slide, barrel, and everything else to build a complete 1911 pistol except the frame. I know I have to ship the frame to an FFL. Can I just buy the rest of the kit online and ship to my house?

Yep, that's why they made the kit sans frame but everything else is included. It's not up to you to watch out either- it's the shipper's responsibility.

I've always wondered what happens with firearms that have the serial number in multiple parts such as Glocks. Does every part with a serial must go through an FFL?

No. Only the Glock's receiver is considered the "firearm" by BATFE. Slides and barrels are just "parts," even though they bear a serial number.
