After several years of wanting one, I finally bought a Leadsled for sighting in scopes and sights.

Now that I have the sled, I need to buy a couple of bags of something to weight it down....What do you use???

Anyplace close by to buy it???

I went down to the local tire store and picked up a bunch of lead weights that I put in old socks. Works well and cheap (They were old used socks that the cat wouldn't play with any more!!!).

Tiny slightly related comment: make sure, unless you will only be shooting these firearms from the Sled, that you verify and adjust zeroes OFF the sled.

They do not go the same place.

    Thank you Sir....
I have been to more than one Project Appleseed shoot. I agree with your statement, shooting from a sling will have a different zero than shooting from the sled. The sled is only to get me on target, it will need to be adjusted again from the sling.

I went to Play it Again Sports and picked up a 35 lb. weight and a 10 lb. weight for mine. The 35 lb. just fits between the front and rear rests on the sled and the 10 lb. "nests" on top of the 35.

I wouldn't think sand would be heavy enough to accomplish the goal of weighing down the sled enough to prevent movement from a heavy recoiling firearm.

Lead shot for reloading costs about $40 for a 25 lb bag (plus tax). A little expensive if it takes a couple of bags just to hold the lead sled down. If you're a shotgun shell reloader then not an added expense - but I doubt many rifle shooters are shotgun shell reloaders. Perhaps I'm wrong.

If you anticipate that heavy of recoil.
You might consider installing a solid stop on the bench.
Then the sand bags for just the lift.

I am not going for anything with super heavy recoil, just a 30-06. I just need something to keep it steady while sighting in a scope.

All the rest of my rifles are 5.56, so very little recoil there...

What are you using as a bench? Photo!
I know what you mean. my 1903 and M1 kicks like crazy.
Can you use a set of clamps.

My range has heavy cast concrete benches, that won't be a problem. I hadn't thought of clamping, that's a good idea....I do have some large heavy duty C-clamps around here somewhere...
