We just bought a home on 20 acres out near Reelsville and Brazil... it's in the sticks. 18 acres is basically wooded, the home sits on 2 acres that is cleared. I have no neighbors... none.

So, of course I'd like to shoot on this property. Is the DNR my best point of contact on the rules out there?

AWESOME!!!! I'm jealous!!! The county is your best bet, but if you have no neighbors, no problem. If you border a state wildlife area, then you might want to find out DNR rules. I'd look at the DNR website before making any human contact....out of sight.....out of mind.....

Yeah, no neighbors... my back 18 are wooded, and beyond that, is even more wooded/agricultural areas. It's an older home, attached three car, gutted, renovated, with a 2200sq foot pole building with electric.

Im excited, I just hate buying and selling homes.

Walk your perimeter, then check Google maps to make sure there's nothing and nobody in your line of fire. Beyond that, I just try not to shoot before 8 am or after 8 pm or so as a courtesy to my neighbors who may be sleeping in or retiring early.

I've been all over the Google maps... I actually scour those before even going to look at a property... it weeds out rail yards, water treatment plants, junk yards, trailer parks, industrial areas, freeways...

If it is unincorporated and you are not opening a commercial range, I don't think you're going to have any troubles. The only thing I can think of that could apply would be a county ordinance but I can't believe they would have anything like that out in that area. I live in a much more populous county and the only ordinances of that nature prohibit you from having bullets cross onto other people's property.

    It's Putnam County.

Do what you want, but just make sure the bullets stay on your property. Oh. And KNOW your property...like, literally walk the pins. Don't be an ass about the boundary with the neighbors unless something really demands it, but do NOT take that the other direction. Respect their lines strictly.

It is certainly HELPFUL not to shoot before daylight, or after kid's bedtimes. Doing otherwise may bring neighbor's scrutiny, and that does nothing good.

If it seems appropriate, and you are personable, introduce yourself to the neighbors after a few weeks.

Wave on the road. Whether you like it or not. ESPECIALLY if they wave.

First, congratulations on your ground. You are living a lot of folks dream.

Get with the Putnam County Sheriff`s Department and ask an office out to discuss your plans for shooting. If anyone complains, they`ll be responding to the complaint. It would be good to already have a Deputy with knowledge of you and what you`re about, so they have at least some idea of what they`d be rolling up on if they are called.

So no need for a permit to build a berm?

No. I'll pile dirt where I want. It's not an "improvement", therefore does not constitute anything that would require a building permit, or inspection thereof.

Where are you from? I understand how a guy could get to think like you are, but I think that this place is not that place. I am thankful for that.

    Any lawyers know?

Seems like a lot of great advice but none of any more than that.

I don't have to be a lawyer to know county law.

I seriously doubt that's all there is to it.

I mean Hobart just started ticketing people for having their own cars park on their own property if it's not on an approved / concrete driveway.

I have to assume noise ordinances or something else would be used against anyone dare build one.

That's what you get for living in the big city. Re contouring of any kind in most populated areas myst be allpied to the city engineer and OK'd.

Acreage in the country is completely different.

Read above. Keep the rounds contained.
    He states no neighbors.
Pushing up a pile of earth that is not directly effecting a waterway or drainage (as stated above and Fargo is a Lawyer) has no effect on value. Therefore no effect on taxes. Therefore no worry's to anyone.

That you live in a socialist confine (tickets in your own driveway.....WOW) does not mean those who can and have escaped to the country are subject to such things.
