The kids either need to be out of reach of weapons or old enough to understand gun safety. There is no middle ground.

A terrible, unfathomable tragedy... condolences to the family. Assuming this was a case of a firearm left accessible to a child, it is an unfortunate way to learn a lesson. Not sure what more the state could do, as surely these parents are suffering a hell I hope to never experience.
