    That's a pet peeve of mine - the misuse of the term in movies, TV, news, etc.

    You got me on that one. Point blank being contact with target I would guess.

    Edit: after reading the definition looks like four feet or less. Might have been 4 feet but probably not. Actually "nearly point blank range" could be proper use of the phrase in this case.
