Hi all - I did it... I clicked on a stupid click bait ad, and came across this: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/m...n-america/ss-AAupMkb?ocid=spartanntp#image=32

So, it says that there was a raw total of 439 murders in IN in 2016 -- can this possibly be right?

A few slides later, it also says that the most dangerous part of IL is Rockford (assuming that would be the greater quad cities area). Could that be right too?

Sounds about right, here are the numbers by state for 2015. If you want a shock to your system, compare Indiana's rate to New York and New Jersey.

    https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/homicide_mortality/homicide.htm

On the other hand, if you narrow it down to county instead of state you get this:

    https://crimeresearch.org/2017/04/n...54-us-counties-2014-zero-murders-69-1-murder/

Did anyone read the comments on the second link? Someone posted a map of the 2016 presidential election, the areas where hillary had the most votes looked just like the crime map where murders were highest.

Yeah, not that surprising. Indiana has some pretty violent places. Not really on the scale of some parts of the country, but anyone familiar with Indy knows the places where everyone seems to get shot.

Several years back I'm pretty sure the Pacers singlehandedly caused a bump in the firearm homicide rate.

Every once in awhile I'll read something along the lines of "20 most dangerous cities in the US" and Chicago, Baltimore and a few others NEVER make it on the list.

439... so our state over a year is on par with Chicago in what, a good month?

Quad cities are western edge with IA. Rockford is a city in North central IL kinda on it's own almost to WI. Lotta manufacturing or at least there used to be, hence the problem. Some parts are nice, more parts are pretty rough.

And? They have a lot of crime, but they also have a lot of people. There are smaller cities that have a much higher per capita crime rate.

Baltimore is about HALF the size of Indianapolis with a higher murder rate. Chicago is about 3 times larger than Indianapolis, but their murder rate is MORE than 3x that of Indianapolis. See?

    2016:

    Lake County: 71

    Marion County: 144

    Total for 2 counties: 215

Remainder: 224 spread out over the other 90 counties is 2.4 murders for each county. However, it never works that way.

Some counties forget to have non-negligent homicides. Whereas Allen had 46 in 2016. Don't forget Indiana has some solid performing/utility infielder counties like St. Joe (19 in 2016) and Elkhart (16 in 2016).

Some counties like Tippecanoe County are either asleep or working hard.
