Is it legal to buy or sell a long gun across state lines without an official FFL transfer? Im in Indiana as the buyer and the seller is in MI.

Not legally. Have him meet you at a FFL in Indiana and do the transfer there. If not, it will need to be shipped to a FFL.

if you need an FFL to legally transfer guns accross state lines, how are those good upstanding citizens getting out of state guns in Chicago?

I thought a long gun could be purchased in another state as long as you went through an FFL holder there, and then the Indiana owner drive back home with it. It is only hand guns that have to be first shipped to an FFL in your home state, in this case Indiana, and then the transfer completed in-state.

How unfortunate that ATF further continues it's uncontrolled stomping on our rights, as it was not too long ago that you could cross state lines to purchase long guns without going through an FFL holder.

You can buy a long gun from an FFl in another state and bring it home to Indiana. It was stated erlier that the MI resident can make the transaction at an Indiana FFL and take home to MI.

Totally legit because an FFL is involved.

    When was this?

Mostly theft, but some gun running from the gun shows in Indiana.

Got this from a big box store firearm department manager:
Purchases are also being made using bogus Indiana non-driver ID cards. Was told this has been occurring along the I-65 corridor for some distance south of Chiraqland at big box, discount and department chain stores near the Interstate. I'm guessing it's easier to come up with a bogus non-driver ID card than a driver's license. Wouldn't surprise me if most (if not all) of them were obtained or issued fraudulently from a BMV branch. Forging a D/L or ID card is possible but it would require some sophisticated means to fabricate it.
