I own a new Ruger Security 9 and a Ruger LCP in .380. Each of these weapons is
held together with a take-down pin. Im sure you all know that. Im looking for
a custom tool that pries that pin out without marring or scratching the gun.

Im not OK with sticking a screwdriver under the head and prying it out.

any help, of course is appreciated.

Never taken one of these apart, but would one of these work?

the forked one or maybe one with a half circle to get under
the head of the pin was in my mind.....

thanks for searching this out......i guess it depends on how tough
the plastic is in relation to how hard it is to pop the pin out.....ive
not had these weapons apart yet.....so i will see..

    thanks again...

My concern would be if it could get under the pin (not sure as I have never taken one of these down, but the video I watched briefly of taking down an Security 9 seemed to make it look pretty easy to pull). The pry bars should be more than sturdy enough as they are used for pulling auto trim without marring it. I have a set I used for my car stereo replacement.

If I remember right you can punch that take down pin out from the other side with a Glock tool or similar.

UPDATE: I found a tool on Amazon that is going to work out fine.
its a takedown tool for a Glock....instead of prying the pin out on the
left side, you push it through from the right....
Thank you VERT for giving me the idea to search this out.

by the way, this tool is $7 on Amazon

Dont buy it there. BTB in Seymour has a whole bunch of these take down tools. I think they are about $4. Cheaper then $7.

or you can use a punch. I think 3/32. That said the Glock tool is handy and I have been known to carry one in my pocket and keep one in my little tray of goodies on my bench.

Is that a standard type punch on the end? Part number or link? I have the same issue but hadn’t thought about using a shell.

PS, on the plastic prytools, I have both an expensive set and a cheap set. There is a huge difference between the two regarding strength. The good ones (from Eastwood I think) are tough nylon like material. The cheaper ones are more like, well, cheap plastic. Both sets are incredibly handy for many tasks!

yep just a standard 3/32” punch. The Glock tool end is beveled and it has a plastic handle. Convenient but nothing special.

Ok, I didn't realize it was a pin that could be punched from the other side. Definitely get a Glock tool. They are very handy to have around.

The LCP is just like the Keltec P3AT.

You can use the rim of a spent casing to pull out the takedown pin.
