Very good question. I know I have seen many claims that "xyz" is the most powerful(pnuematically charged air rifle) or (break action air rifle) or (insert action type). I am not sure out of the many different options available which single rifle and action type produces the highest velocity. (Assuming by power you mean velocity).

I do know that there are some bad *ss options out there. A buddy of mine has the "whisper" air rifle that is quieter than most of the high powered options, it is a blast to shoot and he takes out small game in regular fashion.

This goes to show that air rifles are no joke!!! No one should be calling an air rifle "just a BB gun" anymore! There are some mean air rifles out there—some even firing big bore bullets.

i know from experience that if you want any accuracy do everything the opposite of centerfire.... the less you touch and hold the stock the more accurate you will shoot.... also follow through is KEY because of the dual recoil effecting the bullet

If anyone has ever shot one powerful enough, is an air rifle breaking the sound barrier very loud? I am just wondering. To me this would negate the advantage you have with an air rifle.

My Uncle has one of the high end Gamo break barrel pellet rifles and it is a mean sob. With regular lead pellets it will go though almost 1.25" of plywood at 25 yards. It's accurate as heck out to 100 yards. The only time I've heard a supersonic crack is when he shoots the special pellets made to go supersonic.

Right now I shoot a RWS Mdl 48 in .25 cal....and A Benjamin Discovery PCP in .22 cal. Both are very accurate, but pellet sensitive...you have to try different pellet weights and configurations to see what pellet is most accurate.

Most of the high energy air rifles are subsonic—but deliver a respectable amount of energy (power).

I have seen new Gamo rifles that advertise velocities of 1200 or more and was wondering if they were very loud. For a hunting air rifle I would want the heaviest ammo that stays subsonic, giving the most energy without breaking the sound barrier.

Most of the GAMO .177 break barrel rifles have 1000 FPS capability with standard lead ammo and 1200 FPS with the coated PBA ammo.
I have a Hunter 440 and the crack (sonic = approx 1100 FPS) is substantial with PBA or standard lead with a little lube down the barrel after a cleaning. It will make the neighbors turn their heads even subsonic. I therefore keep my starling and house sparrow shots limited in spring and summer. But in the winter.......

You may be better served with a .22 air rifle for hunting that will not excede 1000 FPS, and less that that to be even more quiet. There are "whisper" rifles now with integrated silencers. Check out the GAMO line.
