I have a relative who works for the Army Corps of Engineers. She regularly makes on site inspections (alone) of facilities and deals with citizens who lease property. She is responsible for issuing compliance letters, etc. A few days ago, one of the people she deals with was charged with attempted murder for shooting someone at a Corps facility. The relative of mine has a handgun license, but cannot carry a weapon due to Corps policy. Even rangers cannot be armed. It is bad enough that she cannot carry while walking from a parking garage, in a sketchy neighborhood, to her daily place of work, in a large city. I'm no attorney, but it would seem that this policy would place the Army Corps of Engineers liable for her safety in these situations. What bothers me more, though is that she doesn't have the ability to stop a threat to prevent her injury or worse. She cannot even carry pepper spray or a knife.

Yeah, they got all of our hopes up last year when it appeared they were going to start allowing people to carry on their property and then that rug got yanked out from under us. :xmad: It's a stupid policy and just makes no logical sense.

Make them liable? No. Her safety is none of their concern, at least outside of anything related to OHSA.

Yes, the rules are idiotic. But, idiocy is what our government does best.

Not that I want her harmed, (or anyone) but I would love to see this challenged. But unfortunately it would take somebody like us (EDCers) following the rules and being harmed (or killed) due to their rules.

I mean, if they said "This jobsite doesnt require a hard hat, even though other jobsites in the state may require them, and we prohibit you from wearing one." and I suffer severe head trauma because I was prevented from wearing what I wear everywhere else and likely would have been saved by it, why wouldn't they be responsible? They specifically told me not to use a tool I would normally use to keep myself safe.

Not even then. Per multiple SCOTUS rulings government cannot be held responsible for your safety or the safety of your family. Not even if they force you or your family to be in a dangerous situation, deprive you of arms, and provide no protection. Not even if they know there’s a threat to them. Look at Parkland school. Or Lopez vs Castle Rock.

OSHA doesn’t even require handguns for cops, never mind anyone else. If they even address guns I’ll bet it’s slanted to restrict access, not provide it.

Pretty much mirrors the firearms policy for every single federal agency, minus special agents. And the military's policies for its own service members on bases. Absurd how paternalistic and stupid these policies are.
