Is there anything new on the DNR limitations on deer hunting cartridges?
I'm fixing to have a rifle rebored. Thought I'd look into any news I might have missed.
Are cartridges such as .308 still allowed on private property? I see what is on the DNR website but frankly with the gyrations over the past few years, well, thought I'd ask on the forum to see what is really going on.

    For private land, yes.
All of the previously legal center-fire rifle cartidges are still legal.
Remember though, this was a 5 year "trial period" I believe, and I think the "trial" is over after the 2019-20 season.

I don't see them removing them from use on private ground, but I'm not convinced they're going to o.k. them for use on public land either.
    Stayed tuned for updates...

    Thank you for the input.
I'm thinking rebore either to .41 Mag or else go with .338Fed.
Either has it's attractions for me... 41 it is!

I'm curious, what are you reboring from that would make two cartridges with such widely different sized cases like the .41 mag and .338 Federal both viable options?

So if I said I wanted one lifelong gun that would more than likely remain a caliber that can and will always be allowed on private and public land and is great for Indiana deer, what gun and caliber would you go with?

Well, my pick for that was a Remington 760 in .35 rem.
    Trimmed it meets PCR spec.
I find the platform pretty nimble, compared to others.

IMHO let the rifle you like dictate the cartridge.

.44 magnum lever action comes to mind. Although 'always' might be a leap of faith.

On public are slugs the only long gun legal? On private about anything, correct? After all the screwing around in Indy, I was not sure what was legal, I'm prepared for whatever. I still have my Grant's in .358.
    TIA
    Have a great day.

I'd maybe opt for a 460S&W single shot. Loaded with a bore riding design it would be the equal to a 45-70 but also allow me to load with 45Colt molds (and jacketed if the urge even struck me). This is the bore rider used in a single shot 45Colt to maximize the powder space and take advantage of the strength of the firearm.

The was a question earlier about what piece I was threatening to rebore.
    It's a NEF single shot.

If you muzzle load a single shot cartridge rifle is it a "muzzleloader"?
In one of Paul Matthews' books he described the how-to's.
He was loading a 45-70 single shot as a 45-90, 45-120 or some such.
No reason why you couldn't do some serious reaching out with a NEF .45Colt, .357 or .44.

If you can hold off until the 350 legend becomes readily available (just announced last month), I'd look into that as my "one hunting rifle (caliber) for deer in Indiana." I think it will really shine in the AR pattern rifles.

    Not far from the tree
Encore platform let's you adapt from M/L to almost any C/F cartridge and slugs. Why limit yourself?

That said, if I was picking on a bet against law changes, .41 is a reasonable choice.
