Having left the Socialist Republik of California where everything is run by the state I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations for buying and selling firearms between private parties. Where do you do it to where you can examine the gun but not freak people out. How do you check to see if they aren’t nuts? Things like that. Suggestions are appreciated.

I like to check them out at the local hamburger joint.

But seriously, I think a Safe Place police station parking lot. But you might want to give them a heads up you're not there to shoot up the place.

I only buy or sell with people I don’t know through the classifieds on here, where I can look up their profile. Once I’m comfortable that they’re legit, it’s usually matter of finding a convenient spot that’s halfway for both of us.

Sometimes I will take a gun I want to trade to a gun show, but I usually only offer it to the dealers who have tables. One time I agreed ahead of time to meet someone from the classifieds on here at a gun show.

Ive done deals in the parking lots of Bass Pro, Cabelas, Auto Zone, and police stations. Also will have people come to my work.
I never do any sales or trades after dark and always in busy lot. I've never had an issue

j4jenk hit the nail on the head. That's how I operate as well.

If its accessories or other non-firearms I'll meet anywhere public for the deal. But I mostly prefer police station parking lots.

    Side note,
Welcome to Indiana from another Cali export.

Although it's not required I ask anyone I'm selling to for a visual on their INDL an LTCH. If they don't have that I meet at a shop and transfer.

Gunshows are a good place to meet up. Public parking lots. Usually both party's are packing around here. I usually examine the firearm, exchange money and handshakes. Then a little back and forth banter. Most of my face to face deals are done within 10 minutes. Before the deal text and talk on the phone. If something sounds off then walk away. If a deal is too good to be true, it probably is. Also left that he'll hole 9 years ago.

Congrats on making your way out of Commiefornia. You can't go wrong with the advice up-thread. In public, Police Station, gun store during operating hours, INGO classies, all good advice. Avoid a residence (could be vacant) and (someone has to say it) the abandoned warehouse at 0200 in the really bad part of town. Anywhere at 0200 should be avoided as well.

When I traded with a HKfiend we meant up the halfway point(Crawfordsville). Had lunch then traded in the parking lot.

We still keep on contact. There are some really fine people on INGO.

White Castle is usually OK at that time of night... At least judging from current events...

Also, what many dont think about is dont do a gun deal in a gun shop parking lot. Not only is it bad form, but to an outsider can look fishy and illegal. (like the end of a straw purchase that started inside)

Met up at a local gun store to swap some ammo and an employee coming in from a smoke break saw us and called us out. He was cool when we told him it was just us swapping some ammo but politely enlightened us on how bad it could look for his employer if it were a gun sale.

Not to mention you are using their property to do a transaction and they dont get a cut of the deal. (no transfer fee) Cant blame them on that one either.

Ive done most of mine in gun store parking lots, including with employees from the store in a private purchase. No one thinks a thing about it & most people don’t pay attention to anything other than what’s in front of their nose.

Not every store is that easy to deal with as I have seen and heard this discussion inside. Many get straight up angry about it so please do not be Carte Blanche about this. If you know them and it is cool then carry on. If not check 1st. You might be surprised.
