If you were looking at two non railed used .45 ACP 1911's, both with around 1000 hardball rounds through them. Which is the better pick and why? One is a Springfield 1911A1 and the other is a Rock Island Standard. Both look about the same in the finish to me. Both trigger pulls are within 1/4 lb of each other and the pull and setoff is close. The big difference I see is the Rock has an ambidextrous safety, a plus as the gun is carried on left side.

Ive had both and would go Springfield without hesitation. The Rocks are getting better but I personally know the Springfield shoots better in my hands. The Springfields I've had had the ambi-safety from the factory and if they dont 1 can be added very easily and cheaply.

I would think the Springfield would re-sell better/for more if that is a consideration down the road. I'm not a 1911 guy, but based on brand rep, and value, as it sounds most other things in your eval are about the same, I'd go with the Springfield. Is pricing similar on each of them?

Seen a lot of trouble with the Philippine 1911s. Even given the things we're mad at Springfield over, I'd pay at least a $50, if not $100 premium for an equivalent used Springfield over RIA.

I have a Springfield with a “few” custom touches with in excess of 12k rounds down range. All day every day... Springfield. Only thing I’d use a Rock Island for would be a hammer.

Had a RIA for my first 1911. Sent it back for some feed issues (feed ramp polishing basically) and it was spot on after that. That being said, I got rid of it and got a Springfield and it's much nicer.

Got a used RI 1911 9mm a few months back. Wouldn't eject so I put a new recoil spring in and it has been perfect since then. Now it is my favorite range gun. My answer to your question is I think you deserve both of them. Take them both home with you. Consider them fraternal twins.

And there it is. The perfect answer.

I owned a Springfield and it ate everything Zero issues. Only sold it because my Department thought a 1911 would make you shoot your eye out (got a Sig 220)

I have witnessed a lot of issues with RIA platforms in several matches having multiple problems.. Some were shooter induced most were not.

I'm sure RIA will become better but they are no Springfield right now

Got the Springfield, now need my government check to send off to gunsmith. I want an ambidextrous safety and maybe stone the sear and trigger to smooth the pull just a little.
