Now, it's official. The rumours were true and it looks like Gary Johnson will be seeking the Libertarian Party nomination to run as their candidate for president. He's got a few hurdles to get over first, tho. Not all libertarians are fans of the so-called "Fair Tax". Many are justifiably against it. He's also got to get past the carpet bagger thing. The LP was burned last time around, by running a gop deserter and libertarians have long memories. That said, Gary is head and shoulders above Bob Barr and has a lot of pluses in his column. I think he'd make a good candidate, if he realises that he has a job outside of running for office. He's also there to promote the party and libertarianism till the next go 'round. This is something Barr could never wrap his pea brain around. Hopefully Gary will have a better grasp. He'd certainly make a pretty good candidate and I wouldn't cringe to cast a ballot for him. Now all he has to do is make it past the nominating process.

He sounds like a pretty solid candidate for the Libertarian Party.

His stance on abortion was the only thing in his email that I had a problem with.

maybe a bit OT, but if the libertarians dont like the fair tax, what do they like? Im just curious. Not trying to pull anyone into a fracas.

thanks,

Heh, The NoTax. That was easy. :D

Many aspects of the FairTax are being oversold, in my opinion, and I guess I will assume the label of libertarian for this discussion.

Politicians cannot be trusted to replace with one tax with another. You will get both in some way or form. The fair tax will result in a sales tax and an income tax. The 16th amendment will never be repealed. Withholding was meant to be a temporary measure for example.

Government won't shrink under the fair tax. The IRS won't go away. Someone will be needed to cut those monthly checks and investigate fraud. Speaking of those monthly checks, everyone now becomes a little more dependent on the feds. After all, they are mailing me a check every month.

Instead of chasing rainbows and figuring a new way to give the feds money, pursuing ways to reduce the already obscene federal budget would time better spent.

Looks like I may be casting a 3rd party protest vote this year.

Generally, I'm not really a fan of the Losertarian party, just because as a political organization they could lose an ass kicking contest to a 1-legged man.

Are there any others running for the LP nomination that you know of?
Yep. There are about 3, as I recall who are currently in the running. Lee Wrights from Texas. Jim Burns from Nevada and one other whose name escapes me at the moment. Lee is a longtime party member and activist. Very popular guy in the party. Burns is a former tax protester who did time for tax evasion. Not sure he stands much of a chance at the convention. Lee is the one for Gary to beat, for sure. It'll be a tough race. And I'll be interested to see who the convention delegates go with.

Lee Wrights for President 2012 - Libertarian Party

Edit to add: Roger Gary and Bill Still are also candidates for the nomination, as is RJ Harris (a gop also ran).

What level.eleven said. No taxes. The government could make plenty of money from sources other than taxes. All they have to do is downsize to meet their income. It's way past the time they stopped robbing individuals and businesses for their benefit.

I think pushing the"no tax" agenda is a waste of time and a dead end for the libertarian party. Sure it sounds good and all that but it'll never happen.

There is no difference between a fair tax and an income tax. It is all just a marketing scheme. Heck, the name Fair Tax was chosen on that basis alone. There certainly isn't anything "fair" about it.

The Consumption Tax: A Critique - Murray N. Rothbard - Mises Daily

As Murray Rothbard explained,
The consumption tax, on the other hand, can only be regarded as a payment for permission-to-live. It implies that a man will not be allowed to advance or even sustain his own life, unless he pays, off the top, a fee to the State for permission to do so. The consumption tax does not strike me, in its philosophical implications, as one whit more noble, or less presumptuous, than the income tax.

Reducing money laid out to the federal government by citizens should be the goal of every political party, at least those that deserve serious consideration.

Of course not. There are too many people who depend on other peoples money for their pet projects and programs. That's why the LP doesn't push that, despite the fact that it's core. We really have to spoon feed duh masses by getting them behind getting rid of things a piece at a time. We could eliminate the income tax first and our economy would boom. We did quite well without it for ages. We can do it again. If people want an extravagant government or military let them do what they had to in the past. Buy a war bond.

You do know that by doing this and with enough people doing it, just guarantees another 4 years of Obamanation don't you realize that??

In 1992, the same thing happened with Ross Perot sealing the deal and getting Slick Willie in office.

Protest votes in elections are just that, meaningless cast votes for a candidate that is not going to be elected in a presidential election.

People need to vote the worst man out of office until they find a more viable option that CAN be elected. This is not, and can not be rectified in a short time.

Until this thought is taken seriously, then Presidents like Obama will have more than their fair chance at getting and retaining office.

Fully aware of that, yes.

However, none of the likely GOP candidates are going to do a damn thing about big gov't and its relentless expansion. So when (not if) it comes down crashing and burning, I'd rather the libtard take the blame for the results of libtard gov't.

The Republican candidate would certainly like to have your vote....to defeat Obama. Protest votes only make you FEEL good for awhile, what of our future and or children's future? Please do not be selfish enough to throw a "protest" vot to the wind. Thanks.

If they did, they wouldn't be pushing Big Gov't turds like Romney and Newt.

What blame will they take and what will they care? You need only to look at Illinois to see the results of liberalism. The state is, for all practical purposes, bankrupt. What is the response from the socialist liberal criminals who run Illinois? raise taxes and fees. The treasurer, Judy Barr Topinka, is on WLS Chicago today saying right now they are paying bills from July.

If, In Biden's first administration sometime in 2016 or 2017 the country goes thru what Greece is going thru now, I guarantee you he won't blame liberism, he will blame eight years of Bush and extremist Republicans in the Congress.

We have to stop it now. I'm sorry, but the Libertarian party ain't gonna do it.

And just what have your heroes in the gop done? Oh, that's right. They've grown government and taxes. Just like their buddies the dems. You guys have downed so much Kool-Aid it's all you can spout. Sorry, but there are lots of us out here who aren't going to waste a vote on your type of candidate. Not even to beat their buddy Obama (who's going to beat whoever the gop runs anyway).
