22 months in solitary and not even a trial. This poor guy was truly victimised by the people involved in this matter and it's going to cost them dearly. Or rather, it's going to cost the tax payers dearly. Unfortunately, none of those responsible will suffer any consequences for their mistreatment of this man. That seems to always be the case.

Wow, solitary confinement for 22 months, awaiting trial? That is just beyond the pale, even for a convicted violent offender.

If this money came out of the pension/union fund of those responsible and they receive prison time, this sh#@ would get cleaned up real quick. Call it self-policing when the pain is felt directly. If it doesn't clean up, then the taxpayer wouldn't be getting hosed!
Clarification - I do agree that this man deserves whatever compensation he gets, I disagree with the source of compensation.

That was his problem in the first place. They sent him to a mental health facility because he said he was depressed, but they shipped him back not even a month later. They didn't listen. He write letters. His physical health wasn't good, and he had to pull his own tooth. This is absolutely abhorrent behavior that should only be reserved for terrorists, communist and child molesters. I hope he gets all his money and lives well, it would be a shame to feel bad for a recidivist.

Yup, punish every damn one of them, no matter who is truly responsible and they WILL make damn sure it does not happen again.

As it is right now, they have no skin in the game so they don't have to care.

Man Left in Solitary Confinement for 2 Horrific Years ... for Suspected DUI

If I were the King of the World for one day the people responsible for this would not be sued.... no, the loss of "taxpayer money" would be far from their greatest concern.

If you've ever seen Midnight Express, the horrific (but brilliant) movie based on the real life man who was given a life sentence in a Turkish prison for trying to smuggle hashish, you probably know enough not to get in trouble in a foreign country. But something like that could never happen here in America, right? Wrong. What happened to Steven Slevin was almost worse -- because he wasn't even convicted of anything. Slevin was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in New Mexico in 2005. But he was never convicted, never tried, never even saw a judge. Yet he spent almost two nightmarish years in solitary confinement with treatment that devastated his physical and emotional health.

His toenails grew until they curled around his foot. His skin grew fungus due to lack of showers. He ripped out his own tooth because he was denied treatment. He basically went insane after so much time in isolation.

    How does this happen?

They treated him like he just escaped from Alcatraz. Actually he looks worse than when Sean Connery was released from solitary confinement in The Rock.
