Lots of talk going on about what the most important issues are in this election.

I was in a discussion today where a friend said,"Regardless of your politics, set that aside for a moment, this election is about clear choices. There is a big difference between the two parties' candidates."

    I happen to disagree.

What I took from his statement is that on those issues which he views as most important, the candidates from the two major parties are very different in his view.

What I soon realized is that what he views as "the most important issue" is much different than what I view as "the most important issue.". This stems in some part from the fact that we have very different views on what is the role of the federal government.

So, I thought I would ask the folks here their opinion.

    1) What issue is most important to you in this election?

    2) What is the role of the federal government?

    1) Most important issue: Curbing out of control spending and over reach by the Federal Government (which niether major party candidate will do by the way)

    2) Role of Federal Government:

*Provide for a common defense of the several States and of the Constitution

*Facilitate and Protect Commerce between the States and between other soveriegn nations, including printing and maintaining of a common currency

*Provide courts as required to protect the Constitutional Rights of the citizens

*Collect taxes and revenues as required to operate the government (yes, that is controversial, but government at any level does require some way to raise funds in order to operate)

Also note that the Constitution clearly spells out exactly what the role of the federal government is (including those items above). Everything else is granted to several states, and what isn't managed by the states is the responsibility of the people.

Most important, follow the Constitution. If that is done, all others including the budget, the proper role of government, and personal liberty will automatically fall into place.

Can you reconcile this with natural rights and the Constitution of the States?

Flight from Keynsianism toward something resembling Austrian economics (i.e. a free market in money and credit).

Simple freedom and truth in economics would, by default, prevent most government overreaches you could list...if they can't afford to do it, and can't print the "money" to "afford" it they won't.

Of course, since neither candidate probably even understands what that means, I'm not holding my breath.

    1) What issue is most important to you in this election?
Jobs and healthcare. For me, they are the same issue.

    2) What is the role of the federal government? To be as small as possible

    1) the education of my fellow citizens that our government need not be limited to the two party system we have today

    2) the role of the fed should be extremely limited from where it is today.

Indeed! We are expected to believe that replacing Rosencrantz with Guildenstern is going to solve all our problems--or is that replacing Guildenstern with Rosencrantz?

Based on their names, which is different and why?

Thomas is a normal American name and he (assuming that you mean Clarence) has a better grasp of the Constitution than the other two, as it should be for someone claiming to be an American?

How about a government united in the thought of returning America to a prosperous nation. Lowering crime by a method that isn't removing law abiding citizen rights. And to those of you that say they are one in the same, the difference if where the control lies, I would much rather have a liberal conservative and generally conservative congress than the LIBERALS GONE WILD that we have right now.

Why try and go after his name? Its his fault his parents gave him a muslim sounding name? Even if he is muslim, so what. I thought we had freedom to choose our religion in this country.

Why some choose to focus on thr birther bs when there are so many legit this he has screwed up. Its silly and makes conservatives look dumb.

    This^^.

The Federal Government should have a Department of Defense, a Treasury, a Justice Department, and a State Department. Period.

All else are items that rightly fall to the States. At least if you're a bitter clinger that actually believes in the original intentions of our Constitution.

I'd be quite fine with near-Marxism at the State level if I could get a proper Federal government in return. Why?

Because I can move to a non-Marxist state and still be an American (an option many Californians have incidentally decided to exercise).
