I saw this article on MSN this morning. At a 47.6 cent gas tax we currently pay it would increase travel cost by 36%. And they talked like it could still happen but would take 10 years to put into place.

Well, at least Obama has the political sense to smack down his Transportation Secretary's asinine idea about taxing the miles we drive......

Obama Administration Shoots Down LaHood Mileage Tax Idea - First 100 Days of Presidency - Politics FOXNews.com

    This is particularly galling:

A tentative plan in Massachusetts to use GPS chips in vehicles to charge motorists by the mile has drawn complaints from drivers who say it's an Orwellian intrusion by government into the lives of citizens. Other motorists say it eliminates an incentive to drive more fuel-efficient cars since gas guzzlers will be taxed at the same rate as fuel sippers.

Forced GPS monitoring of travel, in order to tax us? As far as I'm concerned, this is the line....

Unfortunately, these crazy libtard ideas will continue to surface and be proposed until something "sticks". FDR had a "chicken in every pot" and Obama seems to have "a socialist in every key government position" Give them time, they will show their true colors :dunno:

Unfortunately, you're probably right. The next 4 years will take vigilance to ensure that these asinine ideas don't take root. Rather than thanking Obama (sarcasm added), I am more thankful that at least he is politically astute enough to come out publicly against this idea. Maybe. Puzzling that it was HIS transportation secretary that floated the idea, though. Either he is not in control of his own cabinet (incompetence), or he is cleverly using others to float his ideas, judge the reaction, and then act accordingly (cleverly devious).

That would be my guess, not really "his" ideas but become "his" policies

The real purpose of this kind of system is to keep track of the people. I have never been one to wear a tin foil cap, but this just reeks of an Orwellian big-brother plot.

Don't forget that Hitler promised a VW in driveway. That was just before the Germans had their guns taken, people were rounded up, and war production was ran to full steam.

I think I am going to put my foil cap on now and take my kids to get some pizza, while I can still drive without anyone tracking me.

Go ahead and install one in my car, I've got a set of electricians dykes and I'm not scared to use them. If a fine is implemented, I shall charge the .gov a electrical power users fee of insane amounts. I have to pay to use the power from the light company, they should have to pay to use my power.

Oh come on guys. You are all more politically savvy than this... he will count this as a tax cut. Kind of like all of the millions of saved jobs that would have been lost if not for his good looks and charm. He counts those as jobs in their calculations in the stimulation bills.
