    Lying!

You can ruin and innocent persons life with a lie or false accusation and there is little or no penalty or repercussion for doing so.

God's own word is very explesit, no lier shall ever inter into Heaven. That sounds pretty severe to me.
There is even a vary severe penalty for lying to the FBI. But when it comes to trashing someones life or reputation it would seem that, that's fair game if it is for a good or no good reason.

This even goes for people who pass along lies without bothering to check to see if it is true or not. At the least it deserves jail time.

This should be an interesting discussion. Should "free speech," only cover (as far as spoken statements) factual speech? Should one be compelled to do reasonable due diligence when passing on things they believe?

We don’t need any more laws governing speech. As was said, libel and slander pretty much covers it. We can’t legislate every behavior. We don’t think very highly about the laws the authoritarians on the left. If you’re just as authoritarian on the right, then difference between the right and the left are just the behaviors you want to ban. How about this? Let’s ban banning stuff.

It's called libel and/or slander, and there are already laws relating to this. What else are we going to make illegal?

But is it ever used? Especially against politicians.
For instance, when did you stop beating your wife?
Now you have to defend yourself. Even if your wife says "he has never beaten me", there will always be doubt. Then down the road someone will say,"wasn't he accused of beating his wife?" And here we go again.

It’s my understanding that campaign/political speech was ruled protected speech.

Trump would be under the jail if we started prosecuting people for making false statements concerning other people.

So would the media, and half the people on twitter. Well. Assuming they can’t prove he’s literally Hitler.

If all the lying politicians and pundits were buried under the jail would we miss them?

Yes... because we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves. A govt run by people that told the truth? Boogles the mind.

If we started burying all the liars under the jail, Indy would have a new, tallest building.

Take comfort that justice will be provided in this life or the next.

From Macbeth: Act 4, Scene 2

    Son (of Macduff):
    What is a traitor?

    Lady Macduff:
Why, one that swears and lies.

    Son:
And be all traitors that do so?

    Lady Macduff:
Every one that does so is a traitor, and must be hanged.

    Son:
And must they all be hanged that swear and lie?

    Lady Macduff:
    Every one.

    Son:
    Who must hang them?

    Lady Macduff:
    Why, the honest men.

    Son:
Then the liars and swearers are fools, for there are
liars and swearers enow to beat the honest men and hang up them.

How could Shakespeare have anticipated the condition of our political system today, early in the 17th Century?
