The Iraq war went great, couldn't imagine a single reason why we wouldn't want to repeat it!

One of these days, just for fun, we are going to have to try a war where we give the army rules of engagement suitable for an army rather than a police department.

Separately, the lack of child labor (using your example) is making the "western" world progressively... less sturdy. And less violent. And less cruel. Many parents don't even push their kids to even work around the house! Having seen millenials try to "work" in a "job"... they are softer than even my generation (GenX). And that's saying something.

There are tradeoffs to progress. To be clear, I'm not saying the old ways were better. I'm just saying times were different.

Like most human endeavors, Pax Britannica was a mixed bag. That it faded was inevitable.

The why for's of Mr. Globaloney in that deal deserves lots of scrutiny. An obvious part could be that we were discombooberating Persia on a pretty regular basis to cripple, hobble and hold them back. Other agendas too? No doubt.

The last time we did that may have been Curt LeMay’s “Operation Meetinghouse”, featuring Tommy Power.

Unless you wipe out everything and everyone, when you're fighting an ideology, you're just breeding your next conflict.

I think there's a distinction to be made here. The Iraq WAR went perfectly. The military went in, kicked butt, and defeated the enemy. The Iraq POLICE ACTION was a failure. We shouldn't expect our military to particularly capable during a war/police action mix, unless after the ceasing of war hostilities, we go in and craft their government from the ground up. Iraq, post "war," was a failure because we allowed the locals too much power afterwards, rather than making them a puppet that you gradually allow autonomy.
