Does Panama have enough naval assets in the PG to defend all the 'flag of convenience' shipping?

That song was popular when I was a kid. My parents' god children (the son was my best friend growing up) always called Dad "Uncle Albert" (his name was Albert). We got a kick out of that tune.

I thought the Panamanian Navy amounted to 5 boats, 5 riflemen, and 10 oarsmen.

To un-Jack this thread, I found myself agreeing with Kut (a somewhat unusual feat in itself) that Eisenhower and the Dulles Brothers had no business overthrowing Mosaddegh in 1953 out of fear that the Tudeh party was going to take power and align Iran with the CCCP (after Mosaddegh indicated that he wanted Iran to nationalize Anglo-Iranian Oil, considerably offending Winston Churchill).

There seem to be a lot of tankers from other countries that somehow are "flagged" as Panamanian. How's that work? Like why would you ever hear about, say a Norwegian tanker being flagged as Panamanian?

How the flag of convenience was born was during the world wars, shipowners from countries at war would register their ships in neutral countries as torpedo insurance. After that, the shipowners realized the financial advantages of registering their ships in countries with minimal regulations, labor laws, and taxes--and countries like Panama realized that by maintaining those conditions, they could make fantastic revenue for issuing registration papers. This is why today there is nothing unusual about finding a Philipino deckhand on a Liberian-flagged ship, managed by a Greek holding company which actually belongs to Americans and/or Western Europeans.
