Trump’s Plan to Pull U.S. Troops from Germany Irks Merkel Government and the Media

Under Merkel, Germany has never met its NATO commitment of (IIRC) spending at least 2% of its GDP on defense.

I'm reasonably sure the Germany has never met its commitment, but if it did, it wasn't often. They have periodically pledgedthat they will eventually meet the goal in... a few years... but no.

Trump has hammered them and the rest of NATO about this ever since he got in office 3 years ago. US pays 70% of NATO budget, and we host and train thousands of their troops every year.

He has not been at all shy or obtuse about telling them to step us or else.

Richard Grenell also told them repeatedly to step up.

So Trump announces he will pull 9500 US troops out of Germany by September, and:

“This is completely unacceptable, especially since nobody in Washington thought about informing its NATO ally Germany in advance,”

    ... U.S. president “a hopeless case.”

“A cooperative partnership is apparently impossible and not desired by him.”

“The Alliance Breaker in the White House.”

And of course WaPo and NYT chime in. lol.

    Bigger LOL:
Poland has volunteered to host the troops being moved.

Merkel has been a stain on the history of Germany.

She made a big fuss about climate change, then proceeded to shut down most the nuclear power plants in the country and replace them with coal plants.

It’s High Time for Germany to Fund, and Fix, Its Military

Just another free-rider like the Saudis. They'll hold our coat for us

As a high-ranking German military officer told Politico Europe earlier this year, “No matter where you look, there’s dysfunction.”

That dysfunction includes the fact that by late 2018, only 30 percent of Germany’s 136 Eurofighter jets could stay in the air. Half of its fleet of transport aircraft were not operational last year. Not one submarine was ready for service. Recruitment for the Bundeswehr has been lackluster; a parliamentary report found that just 20,000 recruits joined the service in 2018, the lowest in history. Just this month, the Germans had to ground all 53 of its Tiger helicopters due to technical malfunctions in the jet’s hardware.

The German military is a mess, and that becomes the United States’ problem when politicians in Berlin are too politically timid to meet the NATO commitments they have made. Leaders in Washington owe it to the American people to display the backbone their counterparts in Berlin apparently lack.

Indeed, this is why a burden-sharing message from Washington is so important. If the wealthiest European nation is not adequately investing in its own defense, the rest of our NATO partners in Europe will have less incentive to fulfill their own obligations. Their promises will continue to be nothing but meaningless words on a piece of paper.

Nothing to worry about, old Joe will get Uncle Sam back to the world bar buying drinks for the house soon enough. There might even be something in it for him.

He has told them for three years that the US Sugar T.. was going to go dry. How much more advance notice do you need?

Actually moving some troops to Poland could be a nice touch. It would serve both as a warning to Russia and reward to Poland for their support and it would twist the knife in Germany a bit.

A further twist would be to base them on the western border of Poland...
