Happens all the time. Big breathless headlines followed by kneeling, self-flagellating, statue toppling then the truth comes out...and down the memory hole it goes!

Boy this one is a doozy. Black guy in Seattle calls police to report a "black teen with a gun at the bus stop" and gives police a description. Officers arrive, find said teen at the bus stop and search him, only to find he had no gun.

The next day, bus stop teen goes to visit his probation officer and claims he was profiled and harassed by police for no reason other than being black. Authorities investigate, come to find out, he is the one that placed the 911 call under a false name in an attempt to set up a police interaction. And apparently it's not the first time he's done this.

When victim hood becomes a currency, it's no surprise there are people lining up to cash in on it.

    Seattle on your mind?
Anyways... couldn't this just be a crazy person? I ask this for a couple of reasons. First, he's done this before. Second, the first place he reports it to is his probation officer? If someone was trying to sow division, reporting to someone who works in that same system, on the enforcement side seems kinda dumb. You'd expect that it would be reported to a more independent source.

What is the bench mark for crazy?

And no, this person just sounds kind of stupid. Color of skin not a deciding factor.

This young man absolutely could be mentally unstable.

He could also be a person who's been told over and over that cops are racist, blood thirsty predators, just looking to put beat downs on people like him. He may also be a person that's seen his city and other cities pay out to victims of police brutality, whether that victim status is real or simply perceived based on allegations. He may be a person who put those two ideas together and figured he'd be able to manufacture a situation that could potentially lead to a pay day at best, or a black eye to the police department at worst. I don't know what this young man was thinking, but he doesn't seem to have been thinking very deeply at all.

Nope doesn't surprise me a bit. You wouldn't believe some of things my probationers have told me over the years. Usually in cases like this they know they are in some hot water when they show up for their appointment and it's a means of trying to deflect or gain sympathy. It seldom worked but the stories were good.
