Interesting read. Only problem I see, if it came to pass, would be the widening gulf in the quality of life between what I'll term the FREE States and the Socialist States. It would end up looking like North vs South Korea, and ultimately the Socialist States would implode and declare war on the Free States. Of course, they've already declared war on the free states, so maybe not much different.

I've said in other threads that i think the ideological differences in this country are irreconciliable and the only question is whether the "divorce" will be violent like yugoslavia or peaceful like chechoslovakia.

Peaceful seccession still might just be putting off violence until a later time since:
*there aren't clear geographical divisions between left &right
*leftists are intolerant of diversity of views and opinions
*where there have been formal territorial divisions between 'left&right', they've tried "reunification" (vietnam, korea)

It is a fraught situation, given that there are plenty of barbarians at the gates who would try to take advantage if we fight among ourselves. I would side with Lincoln, that it would be imperative to preserve the union at all costs, and would recommend looking for the new W. T. Sherman sooner rather than later. His job might be simpler, given that the western US appears to be burning itself

    OK, I'll play.

No, it is time to reinvigorate and restore the Republic. "... Against all enemies, foreign and domestic"

Being an American is an idel, not a creed, clan, tribe, race, religion or any other pick your identity niche. You either believe in the ideals of the Nation as documented in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America, or you don't.

If you don't, leave! It really is just that simple. If you find the ideological basis of this Nation to be counter to your beliefs then you should leave. This Nation has not spent its blood and treasure to maintain individual liberty and opportunity for you to discard the ideals. If you do not support those ideals then it is incumbent upon you to leave!

Believe me, there are plenty of people in this world who will crawl over broken glass naked to take your place, and happily do what it takes to be an American!

If you cannot support EVERY WORD OF THE Constitution of the United States of America, and are not willing to fight for its continued existence, then leave and go to the nearest United States Consulate or Embassy and execute Department of State form DS-4080. Your problem will be solved.

Places like the USSR, Yugoslavia, etc have ethnic issues that have been around a long time. Here in the US it's mostly just a difference of opinion about things. It's still the best country in the world even with the poor quality, self serving leadership and I kiss the ground every time I return. Breaking up the power in dc and physically spreading it around the country would be a good start. The department of Agriculture should be out somewhere in the central part of the country. Break up the FBI into say 5 regional areas and get them away from being the American political police.

Nope, the Blue states think that if America is dissolved that they can just take their state lines and keep them intact.

People in suburbs and rural areas might have a different opinion about that...

I have always found it interesting the fairly clear divide between rural and urban populations in terms of their politics. I'm not sure why that seems to be the case, but it seems to be.

    You ain't kidding.

The aftermath of WWI and it's subsequent re-modeling of the Eurasian / Middle Eastern landscape screwed things up ROYALLY. It has also royally screwed things up in Africa, too, but we rarely hear about the goings on there.

Kurt Schlicter wrote this book (series). As he says in the forward: it is supposed to be a warning and a cautionary tale, not a prediction.

The sequel, Indian Country, is set in southern Indiana and follows the insurgency against the socialists. It's really, really good, and I'd say you could even read it first since it's a prequel to People's Republic.

When you think about it, Woodrow Wilson had a big hand in a LOT of the issues we've faced for years.

I'm not sure how much blame the divvying-up of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and/or Africa that Wilson had his hand in. I admit complete ignorance of that. But WWI most definitely set the stage for the Great Depression and WWII... Which set the stage for FDR and the New Deal which ushered in unprecedented Socialism into the USA - which has snowballed almost exponentially since then.

    Thinking domestically as well.

Indeed. He seemed to understand Southern Indiana pretty well, too. I'm currently on Book 4. I shifted gears to read a book that I'm sure you're familiar with, though: the first book in the Dresden Files series.

Oh, man, this is a great time to hop on board. You've got like 16 books in the pipeline to keep you going.

They are great for when I'm flying. (I started and finished Storm Front while flying home from California last Saturday.) The parallels to his universe and yours in the Paxton Locke series are interesting. I think it is why I liked it instantly. Hopefully we'll be seeing book 4 soon?

(And I know I'm in the wrong thread for this, but I just realized that I somehow missed Z-Day Book 3? I have vacation coming up in a week, so I've rectified that situation.)
