They can't survive winters here, chances are it was someones pet who couldn't handle it anymore. There isn't much, if at all, of a permitting process for small alligators. Once they get longer then 5' there is a much more stringent process to own one.

I hope the owners who tossed it out of a moving vehicle on 465 were visited by karma and ran into a telephone pole shortly thereafter. We have an overabundance of irresponsible dip****s in this country.

If you get a pet and later decide you can't handle it, there are many avenues to get rid of said pet. This applies to dogs/cats and the like and while I'm sure there are fewer places to surrender an alligator, I'm sure they are around. No excuse for what they did.

Speaking of people getting weird pets... you should check out the exotic feline rescue center. It's in Centerpoint, Indiana (between Indy and Terre Haute) and has around 200 big cats (most of which came from people who got them as pets). Exotic Feline Rescue Center

My friends bought cabin with a pond near Brazil Indiana and they claimed they saw an alligator there. Nobody believed them until his brother shot it, was about 3 feet long and now they have a pretty cool skull adding to their cabin decor. Crazy how people will dump anything anywhere...
