    Trespassers....again

So we went out this weekend to make sure everything was in place for opening day. Got the stands set up, made a few repairs on a permanent stand, and checked the game cameras. After doing all that we walked the woods looking for some deer sign and also keeping an eye out for a squirrel or 2.

As we walked to one corner of the property, we noticed a pretty abnormal growth off the side of a tree. Turned out that growth was a bow hunter. I waved my orange cap at him (I always wear an orange hat in the woods, even if not required) and said "we see you."

The response from the hunter was a very aggressive "We have a problem!" To that we responded, "Yes, we do." The guy in the stand tried to tell us we were trespassing, and that he had permission to hunt there from the land owner. When pressed, he said the name of an owner that does have adjacent property (but not close to where he was), but that we know for a fact has not given any permission to hunt it.

After explaining that he was talking to the actual landowner, the tone changed a bit, and he said "Look, I don't want any trouble." We told him we didn't either, and that he needed to check the map again to make sure he knew were he was at, and also that we'd be following up with the land owner that he quoted as saying gave him permission. We're guessing he won't appreciate having his name dropped like that in a lie. We continued to walk through the woods along our property line and left, and took note of where he had parked his truck (not on our property).

I was glad it deescalated, but still pretty ticked that this is the 3rd year in a row to have to run someone off. Last year I ran a different guy off on 3 separate occasions.

Apparently "NO HUNTING" or "NO TRESSPASSING" doesn't mean much to some folks these days.

Stay safe out there fellas...apparently buck fever is strong again this year and some folks will do just about anything to chase one down.

It's an annual occurrence for us here also. Here is what i do.

I take a decent DSLR along with me.
    I identify myself.
I take a picture of them.

As I walk them off of my property, I let them know that I will keep the photo for evidence and if I see them on my property again, there will be a trespass complaint filed with the sheriff.

Then I also take a picture of their vehicle and the plate number and wish them a good day.

So not looking forward to explaining to the Sherriff why someone got shot on my property. I've seen fresh vehicle tracks. Bought the Ground Hog today, gates going up soon.

Dig a "Tiger Trap" where the puke is entering your property. Disguise it well with "NO TRESPASSING" signs to each side.
A nice trench trap works wonders for those not willing to observe your land.
The last trespassers I had were pretty close to my "back stop" where I shoot on a tree line. Suckers could run fast.

    Trespassers, pfft.

I had one the other day. I was walking through my property, down the drive, around the sidewalk and then into the backyard - that where he set up his deerblind. He tried to claim he was property owner and I was trespassing! I said, "look, right there is my hammock and that's my wife inside waving at us!" He finally got the idea and packed up and moved along.

A little later I rounded the corner of my house and there was another group crouched down behind my rose bushes! They had the audacity to set up traps all over my yard!

I had one take off on his 4 wheeler this weekend. We ran him down in the UTV. "looking for rocks" in an unplowed corn field. Right. This is in addition to the other two fence sitters. It not my land and I don't really feel like ruining the relations between the landowner and his neighbors. Its annoying though.

Did you escort the trespasser off your property, and/or ask for his name?

We did not escort him off the property but asked him to leave. We do have his name.

We will have to see if that was a good decision. I generally like to give folks the chance to do the right thing and be an adult. But I'm growing less patient, especially since the person last year needed 3 reminders.

Where is your property? It sounds like a good place to hunt.

I hate trespassers, it makes it hard for the honest hunters to get permission to hunt.

I was told a long time ago by a friend that the only way to keep them out is to be a TOTAL JERK. If you don't make them afraid of you, they pay no attention at all. I tried being nice but that theory did nothing but frustrate me with the lack of respect. I now have learned. If you trespass on my property you will be greeted by the biggest jerk you have ever met in your life. I no longer worry what they think of me. The act itself (trespass) shows they do not have any respect for others.
I have had shots fired above the house thru the trees, people threaten me, lie to me, all from asking people to leave. I don't ask any longer. I demand they leave in no uncertain terms, leaving no doubt about charges being filed upon their return.
I don't like being a Butthole but, sometimes you are given no choice.

Well, good on you but after 1 time it would be seriously "ON" in the truest sense of the word.
I will leave thew definition of "ON" to your own imagination.
