I'm trying to learn how to fly fish (I've already have a new rod and reel), is there any schools around Terre Haute or anyone who is knowledgeable in teaching that I could be referred to?

    Thanks!

I'm in for any pointers someone may post! I am in Terre Haute and I'd like to learn. My dad and a couple of buddies know how but getting them to take the time to go much less teach seems hard to do!

If you ever make it to Indy, Orvis in Carmel does free fly fishing classes from time to time. If you can't get to Indy, post here what you're having trouble with, and I can try to help. I know there are other fly fishers on INGO, they'll probably chime in as well.

you beat me to it, if you can make one of the classes it will really help. Orivis, and countless others also have some great videos on YouTube worth checking out.

I can't help but am in for .

I "upgraded" and gave my old prima donna StCroix fly rig to my old fishing buddy who hasn't fly fished in years. He was just asking what the mark on the line was for? Told him I had read to mark the line at your longest cast for reference. He is casting 20-25' further.

This vid also kinda addressed me killing my casting arm in a day on the water. Last year thought I was gonna have to teach myself to weak hand cast.

No problem. I'm always hesitant to offer advice without knowing what others know, or seeing them cast. The Orvis videos are well done, and well worth a watch.

Maybe we should have a fly fishing meet and fish. I know we have tried this in the past, but maybe it's time to explore it again.

If you ever make it down to the shop I can give you some lessons in the parking lot out front....I even gave lessons in Rupp Arena in Lexington when our TU chapter hosted the annual banquet...I coached the gents and Dr. Emily Craig coached the ladies.....If anyone knows much about forensics they will recognize her name....I see her being interviewed on informed murder porn shows all the time....

Unfortunately Orvis is done with their 101-102 classes for the year, I do plan on attending in 2018. I'm having trouble casting, I've watched countless hours of the YouTube to no avail. My problem seems to be the leader/tippet length. I can cast just the fly line but when I add a 7ft to 9ft section of leader, and then a 1-2ft section of Tippit it's a giant, no go. I end up with knots in my knotless leader, or I get little distance on my cast or even negative distance. I've been fishing my whole life either spin or bait caster so I know I'm incidentally incorporating thoses techniques into fly fishing.

I was going to offer to show you how to tie knots in your leader but looks like you have already mastered that....

That's a nice stick. A thought that may help you...in conventional fishing, you use the weight of the lure/worm/spinbait to make the cast. In fly, you use the weight of the flyline. In other words, you need to feel the flyrod load before making the forward cast, just as you would feel the crankbait on your spin rod prior to cast. Let the rod do the work.

Also, make sure you're accelerating to a hard stop on both forward and backward strokes. Some say it's like hammering a nail, or flicking paint off a paintbrush.

FYI it's never a good idea to cast without a leader on. It puts a whole lot of extra stress on the end of your fly line. One of the many duties of a leader is to help dissipate energy during your cast. Give the guys at Orvis a call. I'm sure they would be willing to work with you for a few minutes in the parking lot to get your cast figured out.

Pffft.... let me know when you can hit 60-70ft on a 7ft rod. Mine you my comp rods are custom that are super high mod and easy to break.

Too bad your in th as i would offer to teach and heck im friends with ben and jason up at orvis.

also i bet i can top the long cast as a few time i managed to get the entire line airbrone when i was really fishing alot(6 days a week) and lifting weights for casting.

I'm not sure if this was directed at me, but I was simply offering advice to another member who wanted more distance on his cast. I think it helped him.

As for the 70' cast with the custom comp rods...Not sure, when I'm casting, I'm fishing. I've never felt the need to cast for distance only. Well, there was a competition at the fly fishing show a few years back that I almost won $500. It was a 9' 4 wt. that I had never cast before. I had the lead with something like 84', until the Winston rep launched a 110' cast into the bathrooms.

Ben and Jason are good people.

Out of curiosity, what exercises were you doing to gain distance on your cast?

Never heard this before. Where did you hear this?

I'm thinking it was an article on global fly fisher. It's a pretty good site if you have never checked it out. Especially if you like geek out a little bit with tying your own knotted leaders. Also I'm pretty sure the only exercise that helps with casting distance is working on your casting form. Casting is about form. Not muscle. If I remember correctly the 2017 world champion in fly casting was a 12 or 13 year old girl not a big burley man.
