Have heard trail boss works in black powder cartridge guns, produces similar pressures, etc. why not in a modern muzzle loading rifle, except that smokeless was always a no - no in pre trail boss days?

I would let the powder company do the testing in a controlled environment and give appropriate data. I think Trail Boss may give people a false sense of security since it is able to be used in so many cartridges and load levels.

May produce similar pressures but it's how those pressures are achieved, black powder it's a gradual build up in pressure, smokeless powder is a hell of a lot quicker

Just stick with black powder or black powder substitute, go to Blackhorn 209, or get a Savage 10ML or another ML that is RATED for smokeless powder

Even the Savage calls for very specific powders in the smokeless range. I think using powders outside of that range is what is behind them blowing up on people.

If the gun was not meant for smokeless powder, do NOT use smokeless powder in it. Thats how rifles get destroyed and hands get re-arranged.

    .
    Do NOT.

Never is a long time, but it's the right word here.

The barrel steel used in blackpowder muzzleloaders is typically NOT the 41xx or 43xx CM, or 410/416R Stainless that is required to provide adequate tensile strength for smokeless powders.

    Trust me on this one.

I'm not interested in being the lab rat they test it on, just thinking- a black powder substitute with the benefits of smokeless would be handy. Also realize that liability issues might prevent a smokeless substitute from being advertised as such.
