I know this is an Indiana board bit Michigan is beautiful and sure some one may do some hunting up there and maybe has my answer.

My gf's friend recently told her that a bear had broken into her chicken coop and she lost two roosters in the fray.

There has been a bear in the area causing the problem.

Now I don't know thier situation as far as guns and shooting animals go, but they may want me to come up and "handle" it.

Do I need a hunting license to help with a nuesence animal? I know they have permits up there bit do they classify bears under nuesence animal?

    Thanks!

I can guarantee you that you are going to have to get permitting through their DNR to do such a thing, outside of a direct and immediate self-defense charging bear type of thing.

Bear hunting is highly regulated and not going to fall under nuisance rules like possums etc might.

Yep, almost every DNR has policies to deal with "problem" bears.
If there's been more than one incident in the area they'll likely bait a trap to capture, tag and relocate.
If the tagged bear has more interactions with humans, they'll put it down.

Being a non-resident will not be looked upon in a favorable light, and even less so if you bait the bear to appear.

I really appreciate all your advice and this is looking to be out of reach but for good measure I figure I'll give dnr a call and see what they say.

I really don't want any trouble.

MDNR will take care of it for you. Good folks from the dealings I've had. My property is up by Big Rapids. Bears everywhere and surprisingly little issue.

Fantastic, my gf was telling me a beat problem they had in traverse City, and when her mom called don't they told her they only had two bear traps in the state and that there was little they could do.

Based off that info is what brought up the question of me going up to 'handle' it.

But based in the advice here I think it's best left to the pros.
