Right now, this month, is the time to cut and peel the sapling to use. Trees are busy making new wood under the bark so the bark is extremely loose and peels right off once it's started with a screwdriver or putty knife. No drawknife needed. The same is true if you desire to make log furniture. I just peeled some tulip tree saplings and if time doesn't slip away from me, a few hickory saplings.
