Was going through some pics on phone w fellow deer hunter.

Made some exclamation about a small 8 I shot years ago, as it had a double throat patch.
Did not notice it until it was dead.
Cool, but I thought no big deal.

Last yrs buck, same woods, had a less pronounced double patch.

And IIRC I popped a wide 10 in another county 25 yrs ago that had it.

Neat, but how rare is that kinda thing?

I've never seen a drop tine buck in the wild.

Have seen a couple other people have shot with a "mane"...........just a strip of black hair sticking up on top of neck.
Only seen one in the wild. Shot him :)

How common is a double throat patch? I've had photos of one or two in 17 years of running trail cams in 3 different counties. I've never seen one while hunting but that is not something I really look for. Just a guess, but I suspect that a double throat patch is uncommon but not nearly as rare as albino deer. Like albinism, it is probably locally more common in some areas.

I've never seen a buck with a drop tine while hunting either but have had photos of 2 (both in the past 4 years) on my trail cams. The first was gnarly old buck that my hunting partner ended up killing, unfortunately the drop tine had been broken off by that point. The other was youngster just last year but I doubt he survived.

My father killed a buck with a mane several years ago which is the only one I've seen. Again, that is not something I actually look for while hunting though.

I didn't notice any of my three double throat patches until they were dead and about to be gutted LOL.
Didn't think it anything other than an oddity, no big deal.
Guy at work was pretty wound up about it though.

    100-120" deer, I didn't save the capes.
    Just skull capped em.

Every time I see the title of this thread I keep thinking it says "Deer - double throat punch" and think to myself, damn, that Hookeye must be a bad ass! Hunts deer with his bare hands! :):

    Nope.
    I'm a wimp.
Had a button buck on other side of tree I was crouched by.
    Bowhunting.
    Thought about slapping him.
But figured he'd freak and kick the crap outta me.

I have hit two deer with snowballs from my deer stand to get them to leave. I do not ever recall a double throat patch but I have seen two drop tines from the stand. Let both walk.

I shot a 7 pointer a few years ago and did not notice the palmated antler until I went to gut it.
Small basket rack, but the small blade on the back of each base was interesting to say the least.

This young buck had quite a bit of palmation throughout both main beams. I was hoping he'd survive and stay around so I could see how palmated he became as an adult. I didn't have any photos of him in 2017 but did have photos of another palmated buck last year that might have been him.
