I signed up for a RR pistol class in August and would like to camp out the night before and after. There are 2 state forests near by Greene Sullivan, and Owen Putnam. Both are only listed as having a handful of campgrounds and are first come first serve with no reservations. On Friday I would be getting there late, just before dark. I don't need any amenities, only enough space to set up a small pop up camper. Can anyone tell me about camping in those state forests and the probability that when I get there late friday evening that I would find a camp site?

Plan B would be to make a reservation at Shakamak state park which has lots of openings for reserved spots as of now. If anyone has a recommendation for the most isolated spots there or info on that park please let me know.
