The animal was killed in 2013. Wonder why it took 7 years for the story to be published. It's dated today, 3/4/2020.

There was a wolf shot in Randolph Co in the early 2000s. I know another was killed in Ohio, one in IL and one in MO. The IN wolf came from a pack in Black River Falls, WI and had an ear tag. That's over 500 miles away.

I heard it made the trip in one day, just like Canada geese do it.

I’ve never hunted coyotes but damn, surely someone who regularly does should have known an animal that big was not a coyote?

It is like the city folk that can't tell a deer from a cow but can tell the difference between beef and venison...

I think from a distance that thing would easily look like a coyote. The further away they are, the harder it is to judge size.
