Interesting, I have cut several that look similar while clearing our woods, but I have never noticed a rash. Could be a completely different briar or because I was wearing gloves. :dunno: I'll do a little more research and post back if I find anything.

It looks like it might be a similar family to prickly greenbriar, but all of the articles say that prickly greenbriar retains its green stem all year long. This one has a brown stem and thorns.

Hercules club/devils walking stick from the looks of it and what you are experiencing. The thorns are toxic.

Living greenbrier stems remain green, the one pictured is a dead stem.

I have those on my property. They are pretty nasty little plants but I have never gotten a rash from one?

I try and eliminate them everywhere I find it but even with a good pair of leather gloves they are still nasty little buggers!

I ripped out a bunch of devils walking stick last year and didnt get any skin irritation where I touched it. However, mine were old dry woody stalks.

Definitely not Devil's walking stick. I think it's some sort of greenbriar as well. Whenever I get scratched by them, they always itch for a couple of days!
