Springfield Armory Two-Piece Guide Rod Replacement 1911

I'm replacing the factory two-piece guide rod in my 1911. Do I need to buy a recoil spring guide or can I use one of the two pieces of the guide rod and just replace the other piece with the recoil spring plug? I've bought the recoil spring plug and put it in and everything seems fine, but I wanted to check and see if anyone has done this or not.

I went ahead and ordered the Wilson Combat recoil spring guide just in case.

That is best. While it may function with just the rear half of the guide rod, it's not designed for that and the blunt end could cause binding with the spring.

Thanks Snorko, I didn't think of it binding, but that's a possibility. The cost isn't much to also have peace of mind as well.

I agree I am sure the sharp tip will be a problem.

I went with the Wilson Combat, it came in yesterday and fits perfectly. I guess I'll try it out at the Defensive Concepts class next week. It seems to work good though, and no fears of anything binding!
