This is probably an obscure problem but who knows it may help someone.
I had a problem with the factory mag on my Rock Island 9mm double stack not wanting to seat fully without a solid slap. It cost me a few seconds at the last steel challenge.
I had ordered additional mags and Springer Precision base plates previously and they worked well so I ordered an additional base plate. The factory mag uses a molded plastic base and doesn't use an internal locking plate so there was no way to secure the new base. I looked at one from the replacement mags and figured I could fabricate one that would work. I traced the factory plate on a piece of 18ga sheet metal, cut it to size and filed and sanded it to fit. I then installed it in the mag and used the release hole in the base plate to mark it for drilling. I then threaded in an 8-18 machine screw (I think it's 8-18) then cut it flush on one side and tack welded it and ground it smooth. I then tacked a small bent tab to catch the spring.
Seems to function well and I'll paint it after firing a few full mags.
