Just bought (picked up today) the 9mm black version for $609.90 (with tax) from Guns Unlimited in Evansville. I don't think the .40 is any more expensive.

If you wanna go online Bud's has the black .40 XDm compact for $568.00(money order price):

$399 is a good price for a new XD essential but already said, XD essentials isn't an XDM. XDM's come with a TON of stuff and a very nice case!
