Just bought a Hi-Point 45 carbine...so a 45 pistol to go with...no 1911 or big ass canons...I'm 66 and hike a lot.....this gun needs to be somewhat compact...but tell me what you think...

Shield .45... Don't think about it, just do it!

The Shield has sold around 2 million units in its short lifespan and the .45ACP version is the ultimate expression of the Shield lineup. As a super-reliable and very accurate CC pistol, you cannot go wrong with a Shield in .45 ACP.

A Glock 30sf would make a nice gun for hiking. It's small, yet packs 10+1 rounds into that chubby little frame. It's also an easy gun to shoot.

Commander sized 1911. See what I did there?

For small .45 I would agree with a 4" XDs or the Shield.

Everything now is polymer, striker fired and costs with $50 of the next model. I learned on INGO only old dudes like low capacity metal guns with hammers and big honking bullets
    .

OP says he's 66, so he can be in the old dude club if he wants to be.

If I wanted a striker fired, I'd look at the Glock 36. On the hammer side, the P220 Compact/P245 from Sig. The second is definitely more money.

I need to take a look at a G36 myself some day. I have a G30sf and it's a great gun by a lot of measures, but it's not thin. When I carry it, I tend to feel its presence more than most other guns. I can sport a G23 all day long and never feel it on the belt, but the G30sf makes itself known.

M&P .45 Compact. Sweet shooter, 8+1 capacity and can take the full size 10 round mags.

I think I will have to sneak out tomorrow and see about picking up or ordering a M&P Shield .45. The only downside is listening to the wife... " why do you need another gun, no more guns unless you sell or trade one" I can somewhat understand her position but I just can't come up with anything I want to part ways with. May have to find a way to sneak it in under the cover of darkness and just pretend it's not new. Had to do it before...how sad is that?
