    Hi all -
I'm a new Dan Wesson 1911 owner (Specialist, black, .45 acp of course) and am considering getting a 10 rd magazine FOR HOME DEFENSE. I don't feel outgunned with the 8-rounders, which are very nice, but I'd like to try a 10 rounder and see if it can be as reliable. If it's not reliable, I won't even bother, and I'll get some more of the Checkmate mags or some Wilsons or Chip Mccormicks.

So, I'm looking for something reliable and that works well in my DW.
So, can anyone share experience about 10 round mags in general, and about any experiences (good or bad) about 10-rounders in a Dan Wesson

I have a hi-cap 9 (CZ - but no rail/light) and the DW will serve as the other nightstand gun

My experience with 10rd 1911 mags in 45 say get the Wilson series 47 or the McCormick power mag. One or the other will work in your gun BUT it all depends on the tolerance stack of your gun. Where the mags will ride in the frame with your mag catch, etc. I have several 1911's and both the Wilson and the McM work fine in all of them.

Why shouldn't you use a 10rd mag in your bedside gun if it is reliable?

    Thanks.
I agree, if it runs 100%, there's no reason not to use it. I was just predicting that some internet commandos would say, use only factory original mags... arguing about reliability.

Check-Mate and McCormick 10 rd mags work equally well in my DW Specialist and Silverback. I lean toward Check-Mate mags in general due to price.

THanks. this is the specific kind of feedback I'm looking for.
Do you have some checkmate mags that are 10-rounders? Or is it regular 8-rd Checkmates with an aftermarket base?

In most guns, the 10-rd Wilson vs. 10-rd McCormick Power Mags is a tossup in terms of reliability. The Mec-Gars work well too.

    Considerations:

    • The springs in the Power Mags are stronger and will probably last for more rounds before replacement is necessary.
    • If you have an extended magwell, the power mags may not fit without modification, but the Wilsons probably will.
    • The Mec-Gars are too easy to overinsert on slide lock reloads under stress (the little tab that is intended to prevent overinsertion is too small). When that happens, the gun is out of service in the short term.

Some mag well's will require you to adjust the Chips but I have only had this issue with 2 1911's and that aint bad out of about 50 or so.

I run Power Mags normally I only use it with my Springfield Operator (mag works well despite the magazine well on the gun never had any issues) but I have used it a few times in my VBOB and it worked flawlessly as usual highly recommend the Power Mags.

CMCs have worked well in a couple guns for me... only grip is the follower likes slide forward and the don't always drop free. Probably less of an issue for defensive use vs gaming...

    Oops! I forgot about that!

It's probably more of an issue for defense/combat since in USPSA you try to not run dry (which is when the follower sliding forward is an issue), but you might when shooting under more urgent circumstances.

The Wilsons and Mec-Gars do not have this issue since the front of the follower has another "leg" that rides inside the front of the mag tube.

The Check-Mates are factory 10 rounders (extended tubes with a plastic base that fills the gap to the magwell like McCormicks).

I got them at 44mag.com for $20.54. They are out of stock at the moment....http://www.44mag.com/product/check-mate-1911-10-round-magazine-stainless/check-mate-1911-magazines

After reading comments about the McCormicks needing modded to work with some magwells, I though I'd mention that my McCormicks are marked "Power 10+" and fit as-is with the stock magwell on my Specialist.

I love to see tolerance stack mentioned. It really is the key to understanding 1911 reliability and quality.

i have 6 mccormick 10 rd mags i use in my single stack open 1911, never had a problem with 1000's and 1000's of rounds through them. they work equally well in my norinco limited/carry 1911. i also use wilson and ed brown 10 rd mags on occasion.
the mccormick mags were being used by nearly everyone i shot with that was still shooting a single stack in USPSA. this was long before the single stack class was introduced.
