Considering bobbing the hammer on my steele challenge revolver. Is the Apex hammer worth it or can I get close to the same result bobbing the original?

The original bobbed will do the same thing. My competition action jobs include bobbing the hammer and I radically lighten them. They are quite a bit lighter than a Apex hammer.(lighter is better)

The Apex(TK makes a hammer also) is a great product for those that don't have the tools or skills to do their own. FYI the aftermarket hammers are NOT drop in parts and need fitted unless you are real lucky.

If your gun is a newer gun with the frame mounted firing pin you can buy stock replacement hammers from Brownell's if putting it back to stock is a concern.
