I have come to terms with the fact that I just can not spend $3k on a Wilson Combat so my sights are on a unicorn. From what I am told they used to make a TRP champion which looks like it would fit the bill. So my wish list is Heinie Strait 8 sights, armory cote or such as the finish, 45 acp and all steel construction, Front checkering. What would come the closest in an off the shelf 1911?

Have you contacted Springfields Custom Shop to see if they could build you the pistol you are looking for? The SCS has some top notch smiths and the rates are reasonable.

I would contact a gunsmith, explain the game plan, budget and see how he can help. A good gunsmith can often build a better, cheaper one than you can buy.

How about a Dan Wesson Specialist Commander, it's a better gun than the Springfield will ever been and close to the same price point if you get the stainless model?

Dan Wesson Specialist Commander - Dan Wesson

Dean is right - to get the most bang for your buck, look at Dan Wesson's blems (the blems are most often tiny imperfections that you may never be able to find ojn your own) The blems should always include a paper showing what/why the pistol is sold as a blem. There's also a mark next to the serial #.
Best bang for your buck would be a BLEM DW Specialist commander in stainless ($1200-1350)

P.S> to go with previous post - I have a full size DW Specialist (non-blem) and I love it!!

If I had to do it again, I would get a blem, and then a pile of ammo and some mags
