Looking at one of these. Ser # 51X??
Also stamped above the Ser # is E17 and a sideways S under the E17

What kind of value would this have?

I'm no expert, but really hard to say without pics, especially of the sideplate. Are the screw heads buggered up? S/N matching box, papers, etc? Need to look for signs of pitting under the grips, check the forcing cone, also underneath the top strap, end shake, and timing of each cylinder. You might try the S&W forum, lots of guys over there really know their stuff when it comes to condition and value.

I do not think that you are looking at the serial # with these listed above. You probably are getting these #'s from the frame (When you open the cyl.)

You need to pull the grips and look at the bottom of the butt of the frame for the serial # and go from there.

Just a guess on my part from the #'s presented here..Bill.

Edit: on second thought the "X??" on the end of your #'s may be your way to hide the serial #??
I have usually seen that as "51***"....Just not sure at this point???

The Model 66-2 was produced from 1982 until it was changed to the Model 66-3 in 1986. The serial number should be three letters followed by four numbers. This numbering system started in 1980 with serial number AAA0000 and by October 1982 the serial numbers were at AAF9000. The serial numbers by January 1986 were at AHC1687. I checked my 1980 Model 586 and the serial number is visible on the frame when the cylinder is opened but I have seen many other S&W revolvers that only had an assembly or model number stamped there. The serial number is located on the base of the grip frame. Many grips hide the serial number.

    under your bed!!!
If you check auction sites right now people are asking everywhere fro $550-900 for these. Anything over about $600 is just sitting though. $550-600 is what people are paying right now.

Well I was trying to help a friend sell it. Told him 5-600. Then he offer to let me have it for 300.

I am no longer trying to help him sell it.

That’s a heck of a deal, and even better if it has the original grips. Original K frame wood grips go for $100 these days.

You got a GREAT deal. You should have seen some of the S&W prices for 66's at the Elkhart show last weekend!; you would have paid triple what you did!
